Stephen was born in Stourbridge in 1949 and was educated at Gigmill Primary and Junior Schools and then at King Edward the Fifth Grammar School in Stourbridge. After several minor jobs he joined the General Post Office in 1967 as an apprentice in the Telecoms section. On completion of his apprenticeship he worked on several different jobs in the installation and planning sections. In 1977 he left to join British Railways as a shunter and guard before joining the Telecoms section of the S&T Department, where he still works in its current guise.
He joined the SVR in 1967, working initially in the S&T Department, but has since worked in most operational departments and has been a driver and a guard.He has also been involved in building projects at Bridgnorth. He became a member of the SVR Association Committee in 2002, and is currently one of the Company’s two representatives on the Severn Valley Railway (Holdings) Plc Board.
